Annotation: The article analyses the use of gemstones as the main material for manufacture of icons, panagias, crosses and liturgical utensils during the time period from the Baptism of Rus' to the present in various regions. The periodisation of the use of various stypes of cutting and processing of semiprecious and precious stones is presented. The relationship between the evolution of tools and the expansion of the range of materials is traced. The artistic features of gemstone products, modern technologies and trends towards the use of synthetic stones are considered.
